When is VAT registration required?
Most micro-businesses do not need to register for VAT. Once certain conditions are met, however, registration becomes compulsory and VAT returns must be filed with HMRC from then on.
I. You must register if
- your turnover over the last 12 months has exceeded £90,000;
- you expect your turnover to exceed £90,000 in the next 30 days.
II. You must register regardless of turnover if
- the business is based outside the United Kingdom;
- a business operating outside the UK supplies (or expects to supply within the next 30 days) any goods or services into the United Kingdom.
III. Voluntary registration
- businesses with a turnover below £90,000 may still choose to register for UK VAT.
Please note: VAT returns and payments are due from the date your registration takes effect.
It is the director’s responsibility to send us the records needed for each VAT return in good time. Late submission can lead to penalties, for which we cannot accept liability.
